Training and Capacity Building
The TDCC-LSH FAIR fellowship project offers a specialized training programme focused on specific knowledge, competencies and skills needed to implement FAIR successfully. The training complements the expertise that the fellows gain by working on a use case under the guidance of the coaches. The programme addresses three main themes.
1. Barriers & opportunities for FAIR
Within this theme we focus on policies, ethical and legal considerations and international developments such as EHDS, EOSC, ESFRI's etc.
Training events:
- 17 March: webinar with Health-RI ELSI experts on consent and EHDS
- 7 April: Workshop at ZonMW
- 14 September: 'Behind the Health-RI scenes'
2. FAIR implementation
Within this theme we focus on workflows, tools and specific approaches
Training events:
- 3 March: First Full FAIR Fellows training day at WUR
- 9 June: FAIR Awareness training by Gerhard Burger & Dario Bijker (LACDR, Leiden University & GO FAIR). Fellows participate in the sessions on the elicitation process and assessing the FAIRness of their output.
- 2 July: Second full FAIR training day by Gerhard Burger & Dario Bijker (LACDR, Leiden University & GO FAIR)
- 6 October: Mini FIP course by Gerhard Burger & Dario Bijker (LACDR, Leiden University & GO FAIR).
- The aim of this course is to create, formalize, and publish FIPs using the FIP Wizard, as a follow up on the previous training events. The kick-off on Oct 6 focused on more practical steps: working with the FIP Wizard, creating good metadata descriptions of FAIR Supporting Resources, and using these FSRs to build a FIP. Fellows have access to the GO FAIR Foundation FIP e-learning course, and the course is followed by (bi)weekly Q&A sessions to answer questions. A final event is planned at the end of November to wrap up the course, publish FIPs (if not already done), and discuss potential future steps (e.g., FIP convergence).

3. Transversal skills
Within this theme we focus on transversal, personal skills to implement FAIR effectively
Training events:
Portfolio
During the period of the fellowship, monthly online) meetings are organised in which the fellows present their use cases and the progress they made to their peers and discuss potential barriers and opportunities in realizing and implementing their deliverables. Alternating with the monthly meetings, approximately every 6 – 8 weeks, the fellows participate in half or full day training sessions. Fellows will receive a certificate of participation for each session, stating the learning goals of the session and the time investment. The certificates form part of the portfolio that the fellows compile during the year.
