Project duration: March 2026 - February 2027
Good dataset documentation is essential for finding a dataset, and is indispensable for its effective and responsible use. However, there are many different documentation formats, as each domain requires different information. Furthermore, different information is needed at various stages of research and data (re)use. For instance, when initially searching for a dataset, you usually want concise information; when evaluating the dataset’s potential, you need more detail on possible limitations; and when using a dataset, you want as much information as possible. CHIMAERA brings together various formats to facilitate the exchange of the necessary information.

In CHIMAERA, we focus on three formats for dataset documentation: Datasheets for Digital Cultural Heritage, Data-Envelopes and DCAT-3 (used by, amongst others, the NDE – Digital Heritage Network). We identify the common elements of these formats and use them to construct an abstract model for dataset documentation. Using this model, we will define conversions between the formats and create software that can convert information from one format to another. The abstract model can be used in the future to define and implement similar conversions between other formats. In addition, we are reflecting on which elements of dataset documentation are most important for interoperability, and consulting with users about what they want from interoperability – for example, with which systems do they want to be able to exchange information about datasets?
Interoperability is necessary for collaboration, and collaboration is necessary for interoperability. In this project, we are working closely with the KB / SSHOC-NL and NDE, and will seek feedback and consultation from a broad group of academic and GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums) experts. Regular updates will be provided via newsletters and social media, and the results will be shared in an article at the end of the project.
