We are delighted to announce the next iteration of the NWO TDCC "Challenge" Call. The information about the updated and improved project process of the Thematic DCC Social Sciences & Humanities is now online - take a look and participate!

After last year's successful call, we will once again work with a community-based process for the upcoming NWO TDCC Call 2025. In order to submit a proposal for the call to NWO in Social Sciences and Humanities, applicants must go through our process.

We have taken into account feedback and insights from the participants and our network to fine-tune the different steps: From early project ideas, through transparent sharing and community feedback, to selected proposals for submission to NWO.

The project process will follow the same basic steps as last year, broadly aligned with our colleagues from the TDCC Natural & Engineering sciences and TDCC Life Sciences & Health:

This image is a visualization of the five steps of the TDCC-SSH project process, from submitting your project ideas as an expression of interest (step 1) to submitting a final proposal to the NWO (step 5).

Read detailed information about the steps on our TDCC-SSH Challenge Call 2025 webpage.

Upcoming events and the first deadline

Over the coming weeks, we will be presenting our updated project process at the different local Digital Competence Centres (LDCCs) around the country, through dedicated online visits ("mini road show"). If you would like us to visit your organization too, please reach out to us (ssh@tdcc.nl).

First submission deadline

Similar to last year, the first mandatory step for participating in our project process is to submit a brief, general description of your project idea to us. You do this by filling our our expression of interest form (see description of the project process). We are accepting expressions of interests until 24 April 2025, 14:00 CEST. Submitting an expression of interest is not binding, but mandatory for following our process. All submissions will be shared publicly.

In-person event in April

Additionally, we are excited to invite anyone who is interested in our call to join us for our first ever, dedicated "Project Idea Generator": A half-day, unconference-style event that allows participants to think of project ideas for our call. If you already have an idea, it will serve as a fantastic platform for you to connect with peers and potential collaborators, offering valuable insights and feedback on your project idea before submission.

The Project Idea Generator event will take place on 2 April 2025, 13:00-17:00 CEST in Amsterdam. More information and registration here.

Note: Participation in our "Project Idea Generator" event is not mandatory, but highly encouraged for those who wish to submit ideas, or those who want to make sure their perspective is heard. Places are limited, register now!

Is this the first time you hear about the NWO TDCC "Challenge" Call?

The NWO is distributing funding for collaborative, cross-organizational projects to achieve the goals of each of the three Thematic Digital Competence Centres (TDCCs), primarily related to achieving more FAIR data & software for each of the three domains (Social Sciences & Humanities, Natural & Engineering Sciences, Life Sciences & Health). What is special is that the TDCCs play a key role in attracting, developing, and selecting project ideas before they can be submitted to the NWO.

The Challenge funding strand is intended for mid-sized projects with a duration of 24 months and a budget between €50,000 - €400,000. As the TDCC-SSH, we facilitate a community-based process to bring together collaborative projects from idea submissions to pre-selected, full proposals that can be submitted to the NWO call. The first call for these projects ran throughout 2024 with an initial total amount of €1,6 million per TDCC. The second call will run throughout 2025 with a total amount of €800,000 per TDCC.
